The right starting point

Understand the building before defining the plan

Life safety planning connects a building’s use and layout with the routes people use to leave it. The project team needs clear information about both existing conditions and proposed changes.

01

Building use

Document the intended activities and spaces, and show the furniture layout on the plans so the engineering team can review the proposed use.

02

Layout & exits

Provide current plans showing rooms, doors, corridors, stairs and emergency lighting, along with the proposed changes.

03

Coordinated documents

Discuss the life safety plan alongside architectural, MEP and fire protection information for the project.

Prepare your inquiry

What to send our team

Start with what is available. These details help us understand the project and identify missing information.

  • Project location and proposed building use
  • Current floor plans and proposed changes
  • Available occupancy and existing-system information
  • Locations of all existing emergency lights
  • Building or fire review comments, if issued
From inquiry to defined scope

A practical way to get started

01 / SHARE

Tell us about the project

Send the location, proposed work and available plans.

02 / CLARIFY

Confirm the engineering needs

Discuss the requested documents, missing inputs and coordination responsibilities.

03 / AGREE

Define the next steps

Confirm the scope, deliverables and project schedule before work begins.

Common questions

Before you get started

Does a life safety plan replace sprinkler plans?

No. Life safety plans and fire sprinkler engineering address different parts of a project. Their scopes should be coordinated when both are needed.

Which requirements apply to my project?

The applicable requirements depend on the building, proposed work and reviewing jurisdiction. Confirm the design basis and requested documents with the project team and local authority.
